Unless you are a profeshenal painter you will have just as many problems with coverage with a spray gun (and gun problems as well) as with the rattle cans. As for the quality I believe that the paint is the same between the rattle cans and in the quart or gallon sizes if it is from the same maker, the rattle cans are just prethined to the same consinstancy as what you have to thin the qts to. The rattle cans are all I use, Dad used to be able to get the spray guns to work but not me, tried the one he had and bought 2 new ones and never could get any to work. Stay with a good brand and it will do you good. Now that is where I have a problem is with Krylon, I have tryed it and it never does work, never buy it again as what I have gotton was junk. The TSC (Tractor Supply Co.) and other brands of farm store paint have been good for me.
