Denny, you sound just like me a few years back. The key is to use good connectors made for automotive use, and then the important thing, get a REAL crimper. 99 percent of the crimpers that they sell in non electrical stores are junk. JUNK!( Did I mention they are Junk?)If the crimper does not have a tooth that penetrates into the connector, only squeezing it with two flat sides, it will fail. If you can pull the connector off after crimping without tearing the wire, it isn't a good crimp. One of the above posters mentioned a good brand.
If I were to be making a good wiring harness, I would use Non- insulated terminals, and install shrink tubing to insulate. And I'd use my good crimper, assuming I could still find it after my brother used the shop!
