No harm done Halbert. I was the one who had made a typo. Upon re-reading my post I should have said to touch the hot wire to the battery lug on the solenoid with the stater switch engaged. If you do it that way it will put enough juice through the ignition to crank and have enough juice to run till the generator starts charging. In the 6v to 12V conversions the alternator is not energized until after the cranking is completed. So the voltage of the starter is of no matter. In the high percentage of the 12V to 6V boost the regulator will surge if the engine is running on the 12V system and blows the regulator. If the engine is'nt running on the 12V the sudden short will still blow the diodes out of the alternator.
