Vaporizing water absorbs a lot of weight per gallon or by pound. A wee mist of water droplets drawn into the combustion chamber along with the air-fuel mixture. Absorbs heat during the compression stoke and reduces the peak temperatures. Adding enough water keeps the air-fuel mixture below it's auto-ignition temperature during compression and waits for the plug for ignition. Too much water and the engine will sputter and put water into the crankcase lube.
