If I bought a stock for 20 bucks and it went to 100 and I did not sell I did not make anything, if, when the bottom fell out I sold at 10 it would be reported that I lost 90 dollars per share but in reality I only lost 10 dollars per share. That was the case with vast amounts of 401-k money -- it was there on paper, for a while, and it was considered part of the GDP -- but it was not tangible. I think people aren't spending our way out of this mess because they either don't have it to spend or are scared to spend what they do have.
