One guy I used to fly with bought a WWI Jenny and patched it up and learned to fly off his dad's farm in Ohio. Retired about 50 years later as a 747 Captain. Couple of other guys I flew with learned to fly helicopters at the Sikorsky plant with Igor Sikorsky as their instructor.

My father worked at Sikorsky's for a bunch of years. He remembers seeing Igor touring the plant at times.
Some of the guys he worked with had badge IDs in the single digits. Pretty cool stuff.
