You're trying to remove the key from the keyway. I have had only limited success in "latching onto the exposed part of the key with visegrips and then prying with a screwdriver. If there is nothing in the way on the shaft (' sounds like there is in your case) the key can be driven till it moves up out of the shaft at the point where the keyway begins. I also have a very narrow long taper pointed chisel that I use for delicate jobs such as this.
