The drill a hole system works but don't drill more than 1/4" beyond the thickness of the plug or you risk drilling out the other side of the water jacket into the engine itself. If you knock the plug in it will not go into the oil pan as it is in the cooling system not the lubrication system. The only problem might be a restriction in the water flow but probably no big deal. Be sure to clean the hole well after the plug is removed as a good seal is very important or you will have more problems than you have now.
