Back in the '30s and before, gasoline was 3 cents per gallon and kerosene was 1 cent per gallon. With a 3:1 difference in fuel price, tractors were made to use kerosene. Two tanks were used, a small one with gas to get the engine started, and a big one for kerosene. Plumbing allows you to switch on the fly after the engine is warm. When you are done, you have to switch back and purge the kerosene so that later you can get it started again after it cools down (overnight or whatever).

For modern use, gas is normally used all the time. Some folks have debated what else would work and whether today's kerosene is the same as what the tractor was meant to run on. Someone else can maybe point you to the archives of that discussion.
