One thing that sometimes happen is the starter drive get locked out in the engaged position. This causes problems in trying to get the starter reinstalled. You can unlock the bendix by depressing the pin that is holding the drive out. I somtimes use a sparkplug gapping tool that folds up like a feeler gage or you could use a very small flat screwdriver.
