We built a new house in '92 and had our choice of any siding we wanted, except vinyl per my general contractor. With the house being out in the country and exposed to high winds he would only put on aluminum or steel. Because of the cost difference (at that time $1200 as I recall) we settled for double 5" Alcoa steel. And couldn't be happier with the results. We opted for some foam backing (about $150); the installer said it would make it a little quieter in high winds. Just last summer the entire siding was repainted under warranty (cost me $100 deductible) due to the paint fading more in some places that others. I know the quality of vinyl siding has come a long way since we built but I will never use it. I have seen too many houses with cracked/broken vinyl from weed-eaters, flying debris in heavy winds. When you do lawn grading and seeding, landscaping, etc. you just observe and try to learn from the mistakes of others.
