xcsp, your hay looks normal. The leaves of the alfalfa are shattering while being baled. That's normal if the hay is a little too dry at baling. Making "good" hay is a guessing game at best most times. It's either too wet or too dry. You did a good job as too dry is a LOT better than too wet, especially with the first cutting.
