I had a massey switch stick once,it tore things up. One other thing is the adjustment of the spin out gear on the starter it is supposed to stop before slapping the end of the starter.Too much hitting will break off the end. I often see the gear adjusted out too far,by people trying to make it engage the ring gear without grinding. If the ring gear was bad i suspect it was done.Another cause is the loss of the snap ring and or the loss of its matching washer.
