Plain sand is a poor idea -- that's the stuff with all the free silica that requires a supplied air hood . . .
There's all kinds of stuff available. The link below is to mcmaster.com, and a table of different abrasives and their effectiveness and so on. If you then cick to their next page, they list the types and quantities. You can buy by the 40 or 50-pound pail, but most of what they have is also available in smaller 10 or 15-pounds boxes, which might be better suited to your needs.
Glass bead is good. Glass bead mixed with a aluminum oxide is a little more aggressive but useful in getting through paint. As someone pointed out the glass will shatter as it hits so the more you reuse it, the rougher the finish.
Walnut shells and corncobs are good for light blasting, as well.
