I know out in western KS and up in the Dakotas I was told that the reason for swathing was to prevent the chance of hail damage. As it would be ready to thresh at their schedule rather than when they got dry at natures. I cut beer barley both ways just depended on the farmer. In Idaho we cut on the stalk and in the San Louis Valley in CO we would pick it up in the swath.
