I think you have not talked with any of the returning vets. (My daughter is married to one). When they let down their facade and share some of the real story, you will find the media is not the problem even though they like to blame the media too.
The real problems:
Using National Guard for battle field army.
Redeploying NG and regular Army until many guys go nuts (check out their suicide rate).
Using units in missions where they have no training.
Language barriers and non-understood cultural values among the "good" and "bad" guys.
Tremendous lack of support by the VA for the physical and mental needs of the returning vets. The VA is overwhelmed with the sheer numbers of seriously disabled soldiers.
Requiring partially disabled vets back into battlefield deployments.
I'm quite sure other knowledgable people can add to this list.
