I've heard of that too. Unfortunately I know very little about it.
Back in the mid 70s I worked at a tire store. I was fixing a flat on a D John Deere. I noticed something strange about the rim. The valve hole was about an inch in diameter. A flat washer was on the valve stem of the tube. The guy I was working with told me those rims were made for "powdered lead". He said no one used that any more and the washer was there so they could use regular tubes and fill them with water.
I would be interested in hearing more about this too.
