In cotton country the tricycle front or single wheel front was used because of the extra crop clearance when cultivating. With a wide front too much damage was done to the crop when the cotton got high. Also the tricycle would turn around much sharper at the end of the row so you could have narrow turnrows. Also all early cotton pickers, both one row tractor mounted and two row self propelled, were tricycle so the unopened bolls on the cotton plant would not be damaged in the first picking and then the cotton was picked a second time. Now they just pick it once so modern cotton pickers are not designed with the high crop clearance and all the shields to ptotect the plant for a second picking.
