Karl, at one time a tractor was used as a stationary power source for a good part of it's life (belt work, feed grinders, augers etc. A hand clutch could be engaged from the ground (try that with a foot clutch). I don't recomend this but I do it all the time and that is hook up pulled & 3 point equiptment from the ground by reaching up & using the hand clutch from the ground to move the tractor (I ALWAYS back past the hook up point then I only have to ease the tractor forward away from me when hooking up: no lectures please). A hand clutch allows both brakes to be used and still be able to use the clutch. And lastly when I was too young to operate a foot clutch I could drive a hand clutch with ease. I still love a hand clutch, I just don't like it on a loader tractor or for tight work around the house or barn. Just my opinion so take that for what it's worth.
