On a lot of the older tractors, it was prefereable to drive standing up most of the time. On some of them, particularly the standard types was the only way you could see the ground in front of the tractor. On some of them, it was the most positive way to engage the clutch as they had a "snap-in" feature to keep the clutch fully engaged. Try the clutch on a two cylinder John Deere. They take a bit of an oof to fully engage. Allis Chalmers had both a hand clutch and a foot clutch. Took a bit of getting used to, but seemed absolutely logical after a while.
