Although I don't think anyone needs to "cover their butt" (legally), I think that these warnings are sort of generic warnings just to remind people that things can go wrong and as a result "BE CAREFUL" is the best way to go. It's sort of like a warning on the handle of a new hammer with regards to wearing eye protection. Now, how many of us wear safety glasses when doing a little nailing on our carpentry projects? But, it's still probably a good idea to do so.
