you can figure 3 amps per magnet or 6 amps per axle..per the dexter site. so you need to pull 12 amps for a tandum...
meaning that your wire is probably too small. too small in the truck and too small on the trailer. so 16 ga will no longer be the right wire for maximum braking. bump it to 12 ga..
