I don't know where you have been but a scanner hasn't been able to pickup any cell phone calls for years. The vast majority of cell phone signals for the past 10-15 years has been digital GRSM, TDMA to name a couple of formats. It's a variation of spread spectrum technology. If a scanner did happen to be tuned to a cell phone frequency. All you would hear is a "zip" of static. Then where are you going to find a scanner that will tune to a cell phone frequency? The newest you will find would be a well worn 23+ year old clunker. The cops and national security types can purchase telecom test & diagnosos equipment that will pickup over the air communication. Then again why bother? Every cell phone communicates with a base tower, not direct to the other cell phone. The base towers are linked to the phone central offices via fiber optic and micro wave.Exactly the same way as you home phone is.
