Look at it like this. The lever has three posistions each way. Forward, center and back and top, middle and down. Foward or back select gears while center is neutral.In Neutral (center) you can move the shifter up or down into top, middle or down. Each posistion here again gives you two gears if you move the shifter forward or back. It is easier than it sounds.
