Around here mechanics get about 15 dollars an hour if they have experience and lots of tools. That includes insurance.I dont know what a John Deere mechanic gets, more for sure, probably less than 25 an hour.I know in Kansas City 100 miles away they can make more, not sure how much now.Way less than 30.Maybe less than 20.Next time I am up there I will ask a mechanic what he makes.I know I never made good money until I worked for myself as a mechanic. That was about 700 a week in 1988.In the 1990s I made 1500 a week driving a truck in the Teamsters. There are truck driving jobs now that pay 700 a week and they drive just as far as I did years ago for 1500.You may have to work for one of those places a while to get experience, and they know it,so they wont pay any more than they can get away with, especially to somebody just starting out,and you have to be 21 maybe 25 anyway.Trouble with that being a mechanic for yourself is that there are times you dont have much or any business, and you have to eat the rework.I got tired of fixing things employees screwed up.On the other hand if somebody calls you to fix something on a tractor, you have to go fix it or he wont call you next week when he blows an engine up.That means you need an employee or 2 to keep things covered.Theres a lot more to the job if you have all the responsibility, its not for everybody.
