It sort of depends what you want to accomplish. Most varmint hunters keep a tally and only count the kills that don't make it back into their holes. For them something small but blistering fast is the tool of choice. If you have a dog that likes to dine on stinky rotten woodchuck something small that administers a lethal wound but slowly enough that the die underground makes sense for problem 'chucks around the farm.
