The two stroke model airplane engines that burn castor oil, methyl alchohol and nitromethane mix often use a "glowplug". A version of the hot bulb design. Now many four strokes and recently larger two strokes often use a spark ignition. Initialy heated electricaly red hot,the engine started, warmed leaned out, electricity disconnected and the element stays red hot from combustion heat. No prize for efficiency but cheap, rugged & reliable. Just don't idle it too slow or the element will cool and engine will stall. Takes a careful balance of element material, mass and wire thickness.Element placement and compression ratio are vital as well.
