We use the hydraulics off of a 460 or 560 farmall to run our wood splitter. Hydraulics from the tractor runs the cylinder with a control on the splitter. We have to tie the hydrualic lever on the tractor in place or it will pop out when we hit a hard piece of wood or the end of the cylinder. I have never used any other splitter so I don't know if this is faster or slower than one with a pump. I hope this helps
