Though I don't know much about MH's, I would venture to assume it was a test pattern. I have a McD W6 with NEW PATTERN on the rear end casting where the date code goes. When the foundry wore out the old casting pattern, they had to make a new one. They would run, oh say 10 new castings with the NEW PATTERN plate. If the passed a leak check & had no flaws, they were ok'd for production & received a date stamp. If they ran out of dated castings, they would pull a new pattern casting & throw it on the line with the lot of them. This is what I gleaned from the question I posted about my W6, last fall. I may have forgotten something, along the line, but that should be the gist of it. - Mike
