Rarely do you ever put sealant on head gaskets. Some of the newer style have a red bead pattern (print-o-seal) on surface, definetly do not use anything on them. On some of the old metal sandwich style there are occassions where I will use gasgacinch. Put on both sides and let dry completely before installing. I don't use any on head or block except in a small area where there are inperfections. You will get many different opinions on this, as many mechanics have their own techniques. But don't go crazy and use loctite.( I've seen it done)
