First off...Get yourself an I&T FO-4 shop manual...$20.00 cheap... Yup...You are going to have to remove the cover plate that holds the shifter, fill plug and starter. It is pretty straightforward, and there are no major precautions. You will probably need a new gasket to put it back together. You should be able to put it back together pretty easily though.
Not only is there a nut down in the tranny now, but there should be a star shaped lock-washer that you are going to have to find.
Good luck and if you can't get it back together, you better post on the 'N' board before you try and run her...
