Just wanted to jump in and say that I drove by a WM the other day and 1) no one ran out and forced me to go into the store and buy anything.
2) no one pulled out a gun and forced me to go and apply for a job there.
My point is that nobody is forcing anybody to do anything with regards to Wal-Mart. People shop there for their own personal reasons and people work there for their own personal reasons. If T-40 had his way, our socialist govt would FORCE Wal-Mart and others to pay higher wages or he would FORCE people to not shop there. That's the socialist way: my way or else.
As for the "livable" wage, I agree with the others that this is an arbitrary amount: What I could live on might not be what T-40 could live on. the best way to set wage scales is by labor market forces. Advertise for jobs paying $3/hr. You'll get NO responses. Advertise for $8. You'll get a few. Advertise for $15 or $20 and you'll have people lined up around the block. It also depends on what you need as an employer. You may find that you have to pay more to get the skill set you want with the attitude and work ethic you want.
The bottom line is that WM must be paying the right amount to get the skill set and attitude they want. They must be pricing their product right to keep the customers coming back.
And for those workers that want do do better, I have some advice: improve your education, your skill set and/or your attitude. Don't sit back on your rear end and expect someone to hand you a $25/hr job with full benefits for unskilled labor. It ain't gonna happen, and rightfully so.
