We have a little more personal time and energy today and in some cases more sensitivity than 50-60 years ago. Not many of the fathers and mothers had extra time as they were working to the limits physically. I would have been in big trouble even if I sulked at cleaning out a chicken house on a hot day. Reaching into hen nests with broken eggs, cultivating corn hour after hour at maybe one mile per hour, mowing hay constantly stopping to unplug the gopher mound dirt. Life is/was great. When I raised my family in the city, I had no place to assign work to them that was meaningful to the family welfare. Had to participate with them by contracting plots of corn to detassel--a job I wouldn't wish on anyone. But the three kids learned to work, sometimes at pretty rummy jobs. Gitrib, you and I remember having the cow put her foot in the pail when you were almost done! Does that build character. And the presence of cameras everywhere in our life, does it bring happiness and success? Leonard
