Cranking speed is important for most diesels. If a diesel engine hesitates at each compression stroke, it is not cranking fast enough. One further note after reading Ken's post. If your Ford is the 3 cylinder model, check the fuel flow from the tank. There is a screen that sometime stops up and causes the fuel system to lose prime.
