I was raised to be courteous to everyone I met. Even if I didn't really like them. I don't mind being bothered by waiters/waitresses.
However, two weeks ago I took my daughter out to eat. It had been planned in advance, so I had to go, but I had a terrible headache that day. All I really wanted to was be left alone. The waitress was attentive, but not overly so. The problem was mine, not her's, so I kept it to myself and was polite to her.
Which brings up another reason to be nice. Anyone who deals with the public has a tough job. Even the nicest person can have a bad day, and it is these people who get the short end. I've been polite and friendly with various people... wait-staff, tellers, cashiers... and I've seen them brighten up as if the sun broke through the clouds. That is always worth it.
