Synthetic rubber is a petroleum derivative. brought about by our being cut off from the gum rubber of southeast asia in WWII. modern tires have more steel in them than ever, or polyester, which again is a petroleum derivative. Carbon black helps in longevity of the rubber. wearability. The red inner tubes date from before WWII mostly and they were natural rubber.
