I did this with a Howse 5' hog about 12 years ago. I diden't have a tractor with 3 pt and only had a JD AR to pull it. I welded 2 pieces of 1.5" X 1/4" angle into a square and connected it to the existing slide tube. I also used a rear axle from a Dodge Omni for the trailing wheels. I took a guess from other trailers I'd seen, and made the slide shaft stop just behind the hitch. By the time I hooked it up to the PTO, there was a foot of sliding area for the shaft.
PTO shaft placement on older tractors varies in height and distance from drawbar
I have to repair my brush hog since climbing out of a low ditch, the hog bit into the ground and the AR (unphased by this, and thumping away)ripped 1/2 the teeth off the pinion gear, so good luck!
