the pump's inlet and outlet are a good guide to the pipe size needed. If you know how to work with steel tubing or pipe, I think it makes for a better looking job, it's usually cheaper than hose, it'll last longer. You'll have to go to hose somewhere probably because of the need for flexibility, to adust the pump's belt, or where there is movement at the cylinder(s).
