The problem with the pipe spacers will be keeping them from bending with side pressure that you get with a belt pully. Make sure you get all cuts absoulty straight (Not off even by a 1/2*) as that will want to put the shaft in a bind. Do all cuts with a power hacksaw that holds the pieces while doing the cutting, you can't cut straight enough by hand. Now after they are cut and use a pipe that can be welded, not galvanized, now cut strips of flat iron to fit between all pipes, bale sides of a box, and weld them in. Will take care of side stress.
