battery exploded

I have a JD 3010 diesel. Been starting fine until today. Went to to start it and heard a loud pop and saw smoke come from the battery box. Checked the connections and found they were pitted. Cleaned the connections and tried again. Tractor started fine. The next time it popped again and when I checked again it had blown the side of the battery case. Any ideas?
