If if you think an animal has rabies you call the heath department and the health inspecter comes and gets a brain sample and sends it off. Retired and new health inspecter in the county are both good family friends. Both have said that most all suspected cases come back as some form of poison around here.
I'd say you did the right thing. Glad you didn't get bit or hurt. Might want to call local health folks and get it checked. Might want to forget about the feeding it part cause if they are like folks here, they will say you should have vacinated. It was a stray that just showed up like that.
