Barn cats in my area often get like that. It's usually distemper along with other respiratory problems. The eyes and nose often get very runny, cats will cough and wheeze, etc. Seems to happen at dairy farms that get very high populations of cats. Numbers get real high, then many die off, and the cycle starts over again.
Rabies is quite different. We get many racoons and skunks here that are rabid. They often show their teeth, and sometimes chew their own lips off. Also, act strange - like coming out in the middle of the day in front of people, etc. We've had so many rabid animals here for the past 20 years, it's not an attention-getter anymore. Animal comes around sick, we shoot it.
Rabies can take up to a year to incubate after you get bit, so sometimes, when someone does die from it - nobody knows where it came from. A little girl died here last year and nobody in the family recalled her ever being bit by anthing. They did some testing and identified that strain of rabies coming from a bat. So, they're guessing that she may of been scratched or bit while sleeping in her home.
