When I started out to pull the (wet)sleeves out of our Z134 MH50 I tried the wood block and hammer routine and gave up out of fear.

I was on good terms with a lathe man at work and got him to turn me a simple stepped disc that would fit into the bottom of a sleeve. A hole in the middle accepted a piece of 1/2 inch ready rod.

On top of the block over the sleeve to be pulled I had a simple cross bar with a hole in it, which was supported by a couple of blocks.

The ready rod could then be tightened, and the sleeve would come up. Once it got above the oring seal region it came out easily. Took about 15 minutes to pull all four once I was ready to do it, and I didn't have to stand there swinging hammers at the bottom end of the engine.

As I recall the I&T manual tells you to pull them something like I described.
