Smoking can be an indication of worn rings, but you should have done a compression check before removing the head. Yes, the pistons can move, but how much? There are specs for piston side wear, like everything else. Also out of round and top to bottom wear, front to back and side to side. Good time to practice micrometer measurements. New sleeves and pistons solves it all. Good oil pressure would indicate that your bearing clearances are good, mains, rods, cam- along with oil pump capacity.
