Does the tractor have Hi-Lo? Does it work properly? What about the PTO?
If there was a problem with either of those I'd say the problem is related to the charge pump or a leak in that system... but given that it seems intermittent, I'd guess that it's in the stroke control on the main pump.
At this point in time I think you either need someone well versed in the workings of that hydraulic system to have a look at it or else start investing in DEERE service manuals if you're going to DIY.... You're only going to get so much understanding of it reading comments on here... and you really need to understand it fully if you're going to fix it.
