I am not a Hotmail user, so I'm not the best person to ask this quesion. I assume you've already tried the "Forgot your Password" link on the Hotmail site. I suppose that link will prompt you for answers to "private" questions that only you should know.
One thing I realized after going to hotmail.com is that Hotmail now uses "Windows Live" IDs. Are you sure whether you're using your old Hotmail ID and password or a Windows Live ID and password? You may have created a Windows Live ID without realizing it just by accessing another Microsoft web site. I know that the MS Live Meeting and the MS Developer's Network both require Live IDs.
Note that just because you can't log into your email and you have some spam doesn't mean your account has been compromised. But until you get back in you don't know for certain.
The password reset systems that prompt you for answers to private questions are notoriously insecure. It's just not that difficult to figure out someone's so-called personal information, such as data of birth, mother's maiden name, or school name. You may recall that someone easily broke into Sarah Palin's Yahoo account, since the answers to those questions were all common knowledge.
This is one hazard of using a free email account: You have no way to prove you are the owner of your account.
