it shouldnt be the main valves if it runs on gas ok.wouldnt hurt to check gas compression.when running on diesel you should be able to remove the spark plugs and have no compression leaking out plug holes.if there is then your compression release valves are not holding or leaking.but still check out your linkage for adjustment.if the pump is filling with diesel its the trasfer pump seals that need replacing.and another thing adjust the main valves to spec, as the valve seats wear it decreases valve lash clearance.
