9N began in 1939. 2N began in 1942 modified to save on strategic war materials. Except for the modifications (tires and wheels and stuff) they were identical with interchangeable parts. Parts that didn't change didn't get new numbers. The 8N was a significant improvement in 1948 with better steering and 4 speeds forward in the transmission. Still an 8N had parts marked 9N.
