DC gives you the option of straight or reverse polaity.

Reverse = Electrode pos. Work neg.
More forceful arc deeper penitrating

not as deep penitrating better for thinner work

AC is of course alternating current and the polaity is constantly changing + - + -

This constant switching of the current direction has somewhat of a pulsating effect on the arc and tends to produce a medium penitrating weld that is more dense and uniform.

With my 2 cents if you are doing much welding go for the ac/dc welder. If you weld rarely the ac should get you along just fine.
