I've found the same thing - getting that bezel off is not easy. Prying it off very carefully is the only way that seems to work. Just a small screwdriver under the lip on the outside a wee bit at a time going around and around will usually do the trick. Even then, they are pretty tight but can usually be coaxed off. After cleaning up, etc. they go back together OK. Sometimes you've got to cut a new rubber or paper gasket as a seal. Then, bend the bezel back to where it was once everything is together. You'll probably break a glass plate or two but if you've got a good collection, most glass seems to work elsewhere.
